GANGSTER CHASE – San Francisco 1935

Immersive 3D Projection Mapping & Holographic Experience at the Autoseum

The Autoseum presents “Gangster Chase – San Francisco 1935”, an immersive audiovisual installation that combines historical storytelling, cutting-edge projection mapping, and holographic technology into a unique museum experience.

At the center of the installation stands an original Willys 77, placed inside a fully immersive 3D cave environment. Using three synchronized projectors, the space transforms into a dynamic scene projected across two walls and the floor, surrounding visitors with a cinematic recreation of 1930s San Francisco.

Inside the vehicle, a holographic character appears behind the steering wheel using a classic Pepper’s Ghost setup. A carefully angled glass surface reflects a projected image, creating the illusion of a living driver interacting with the audience in real time.

A Story Between History and Entertainment

The experience is built around a short film of approximately 3 minutes and 50 seconds, telling the story of a gangster chase during the time of Prohibition and the Great Depression.

Through a mix of action, narration, and humor, the installation explains:

  • The economic collapse following the 1929 stock market crash
  • The rise of illegal alcohol trade during Prohibition
  • The division of cities into gang-controlled territories
  • The increasing importance of automobiles over weapons

Visitors not only witness a high-speed pursuit through San Francisco but also gain insight into the technical and cultural significance of vehicles such as the Willys 77 and the Ford Model A.

AI-Driven Production Pipeline

A key aspect of the project is its fully AI-supported production workflow.

The following elements were created using advanced AI tools:

  • Cinematic video content
  • Original music score
  • Holographic character animation
  • Voice performances in English, German, and Swedish

Previsualized 3D animatics were used as a foundation to ensure spatial accuracy, timing, and alignment between projections, holography, and the physical vehicle.

In a unique twist, the holographic character is based on the face of the Autoseum’s owner, integrating a personal element into the narrative.

Technology & System Architecture

The installation runs on a highly efficient technical setup:

  • 3 video projectors (walls + floor)
  • 1 display screen
  • 1 interactive touchscreen interface
  • 5 synchronized Raspberry Pi systems controlling playback and media

This network-based architecture allows for precise synchronization while maintaining a minimal hardware footprint and cost efficiency.

High-End Experience, Minimal Budget

While a traditional production of this scale would typically require a budget of approximately
1 million SEK, the use of AI tools and optimized workflows made it possible to realize the entire installation at a fraction of the cost.

The result is a world-class immersive experience that demonstrates how emerging technologies can redefine museum storytelling.
